When you look at the statistics on the number of people who connect to the Internet or social media, you get excited. There has never been a time with so many opportunities concentrated in one place. Today, you no longer need to send your direct mail flyers or pay for newspaper ads.
Today, you can pay for a Facebook ad and reach more people than any of your previous efforts combined. For entrepreneurs who are just starting out, you don’t have to spend a dime, but you can still develop an audience that will lead to new business.
Reaching the billions of potential people online, however, is easier said than done. More than a small number of entrepreneurs have resigned, frustrated with the time and effort required to build an online foundation. Here are five tactics that successful online entrepreneurs use to build a foundation and their business.
1. They create engagement.
These days, you can buy a subscription if you wish. Twitter followers, Instagram followers and Facebook likes are all for sale. You can even buy mailing lists but buying an audience is useless because there is no commitment. Often times, these are people who will not interact or care about what you are doing.
Successful online entrepreneurs create a conversation that makes people talk and share. When they post content on their website or on social media, their goal is for their community to interact. This interaction brings new people to check out what they are doing and what they have to offer.
You can have a huge audience, but it makes no sense if there is no engagement.

2. They continue to grow their audience.
When you look at why entrepreneurs have failed, it’s because they focused on systems, not on building an audience. They’ve always tweaked their website, published another eBook, and created custom graphics on Canva. They did all the superficial things, but they had no audience to see these efforts.
There are countless things you can do to help grow your business, but they are useless if you don’t have an audience. Successful online entrepreneurs spend most of their time building their audience by:
- Guest publication.
Write for great authority sites like this.
- Get interviewed on podcasts.
These are just a few strategies that you can use to create your online suite. In its simplest form, if you don’t have an audience, go to where your audience is and show them why they should follow you.
3. They don’t get distracted by envy.
Today, we are exposed to the success of other entrepreneurs in a public way. It could be a Facebook friend or a podcast you’re listening to, but someone who does what you do also wins where you didn’t. The urge begins to infiltrate and turns you away.
When you focus on someone or something else, you have lost focus on your mission and goals. If someone else succeeds, praise them and start building your business again. You don’t have time to let the urge distract you.

4. They add undeniable value.
No matter what content they broadcast, it’s quality. You can get exposure in other places, but when people come back to your website, they should see value. Your best efforts should be devoted to the content of your website, your mailing list and your social networks. It should be so good that people want to tell others what you are doing.
5. They are constantly learning.
Information overload is a danger, but successful online entrepreneurs are always learning to perfect their craft. They focus on learning what will help their next steps, not chasing shiny items that are the fashion of the week.
With targeted effort and the right tactics, you can build an online business that gives you the advantage of location independence. You can run a business you love from anywhere in the world. The goal of any business is freedom. Use these tactics to make this freedom a reality in your life.
The statistics on a successful and successful online business are pretty grim. Beating the odds and creating a successful business takes time and agitation. When in doubt, focus on building your audience. When you have an audience, you can create products and services based on public feedback, which is what they will buy the most. It does not happen the other way around.
